That's All, Folks!

We closed our show over a week ago, and it was a massive success. More than 300 people came to see the show, we had three sold-out shows, and all of our reviews were positive! We'll walk away from this experience with many warm memories. Thank you to everyone who helped with the show, and who came out and watched it. We couldn't have done it without you!

Our Acting Tricked the Police!

First off, we had a sold out Thursday performance! Yay!! And the audience response was so positive.

But, apparently, during a particularily distressful scene, someone was walking outside of Little Mountain Gallery. They heard our screams of "Let us out!" and "I gotta get outta here!", not realizing we were doing a scene. They actually called the police, thinking that there were people inside Little Mountain who were trapped. So, at the end of our performance, a policewoman (a very nice one at that) came by the venue to ask if anyone was in danger. Jenn Stewart, our wonderful stage manager, essentially had to explain, "No one was in danager, we were just acting. We were pretending we were in quarantine"

A very eventful, fun night.

Opening Night a Huge Success!

On Sept. 10, we opened our show to a completely packed house! The energy was electrifying, and the audience absolutely loved the show. We even got applause after the fast forward sequence! All of us had so much fun doing the show, and being surrounded by all that love. Unfortunately, our director, Anthony F. Ingram couldn't be there to join us, but his presence was definitely in the room. Thank you to everyone who came out and showed their support!

Afterwards, the cast, crew, and a small group of friends went over to our lovely assistant director's house, Emilie, to relax and enjoy the success of our Opening Night show.

Rehearsals thus far

So our official rehearsal period has ended, and we are now getting ready to go into tech week. The rehearsal process was a seriously amazing one. Here's a little re-cap:

July - We started re-writing the original Heptademic script. With Rachel Peake at the helm as dramaturge, we nurtured our characters into much more complex and interesting people; we changed and, in some cases, re-wrote our characters' fantasies entirely; and we brought the script to a darker, but still largely humourous, place. A lot of gummy bears, cheese strings, and pop was consumed in the process.

August - Anthony F. Ingram took over as director. It takes a certain type of character to fit into our group's particular dynamic, and luckily, he fit in just fine. Using the script and a whole lot of imagination, scenes and fantasy sequences were built with a sense of energy and play. Rehearsals took place at Dreamlife Studios, and high energy, sweaty rehearsals were not uncommon. Unfortunately, Anthony had to leave us before our show opened, but Emilie Leclerc has more than capably taken over and has worked to refine scenes while staying true to Anthony's original vision.

Some fond memories from the rehearsal process:

- Raes asking you, "You've got a band, what's it's name?", and you had to reply with the first few words that came into your head. Some of the band names that people came up with were "France and Jekyll", "The Pantsuit Hobos", and "Polly and the Chocolate Factory".

- Playing games of Cowboy, Samurai, and the immortal Big Booty. A new game was also invented called "You've got a band, what's it's name?" and the entire group had to act out the made-up band name.

- Anthony telling us about various Kurosawa films that we had to see

- "Totes, totes, totes, mag-otes." This was repeated incessantly throughout the rehearsal process

- Lisa's amazing man scream during one of the fantasy sequences

- Emilie giggling uncontrollably when giving a note about a strobe light

- "Aaron is turned on by penguins." Not sure when it was said, but a pretty sweet sentence.

- Gui having buttons on his rehearsal shirt that allowed him to go from clothed to barechested in a matter of seconds. You can imagine how many times he took full advantage of this shirt.

Excited about going into tech week and then opening the show! Yay!!!!

Heptademic Redux Teaser Article

An article written by Matthew Aitken.

Theatre is always best when it scrutinizes society, its citizens and the way those citizens interact. Hardline Productions's Heptademic Redux, playing at this year's Fringe Festival is a play about Vancouver in a fishbowl.
Seven characters are rounded up and placed in quarantine. A deadly virus is threatening the lives of everyone in the world. Homes and neighbourhoods have been evacuated. The characters are ushered into a room and left. They don't have much information about their predicament.
"It's a microcosom of society at large in this room; it's an exploration of their fears and dreams," said Heptademic Redux's director, Anthony F. Ingram.
Heptademic Redux was written by the cast, and all seven writers created characters representing all walks of life. Much of the confict is drawn from the characters' different points of view.
"The characters come from every social strata; everything from politicians to welfare cases. When an audience comes in, they should see the society they live in refected on stage.

While the characters represent various social classes and mindsets, the multi-ethnic cast brings a diversty to the stage that Ingram feels is desperately needed in Vancouver theatre. Ethnicity is never discussed by the characters in Heptademic Redux because, as Ingram points out, “in real-life it’s not really an issue for most of us.”
But when the demographics of people living in the Lower Mainland are compared to the demographicsof actors on Lower Mainland stages, a disparity quickly emerges."The actors in this play are the next generation of Vancouver Theatre and they refect the city they live in. I hope the people with money to produce mainstage theatre in this town come to see this show, and see how it could be,” Ingram said.

It could be cast like Heptademic Redux, where every person involved is equal. The show has played once before as part of Studio 58's Risky Nights series in October 2008.
Co-writer and performer Andrea Yu thinks Heptademic deserves the Redux tag because of its strong sense of collaboration.
When she started approaching people about staging it at the Fringe, “everyone wanted to be involved,” she said.
“Everyone had a strong connection to it. Heptademic has a big sense of play. The actors are genuinely playing with each other and it's fun.”
Every actor in Heptademic Redux is on stage for the whole hour. Confned to a room, the actors don't have any opportunity to get out of the light.
“Even if someone doesn't have lines for a scene, they're onstage. That has to be worked in,” Yu said.

At frst, the characters are uncertain and have a few questions about their one-room confnement. But as they accept their short-term fate, they start to get along and relax.
And when they relax, their minds drift off into fantasy.“The fantasies are hyper-truth,” said Yu.
The goal is to present a full character, someone with real hopesand dreams, legitimate concerns and needs. All of the characters are hiding aspects of theirpersonalities from the others in the room and when they are laid out, the result can be hilarious or horrifying.
“In real life, you only reveal a certain percentage of yourself. If you lived all out there, all the time, you'dbe a cartoon,” said Yu.
The creative team behind Heptademic Redux hopes the audience is engaged by the actors' strong performances and the suggestion that no matter how different people are, they can get along. “If there’s a message; it's to look at the fullness of another person,” said Ingram

Welcome to the Official Heptademic Redux Blog!

A long, long time ago, way back in 2008, a show was conceived called Heptademic. After living a full and robust life for about a week, it was forced to die but was fondly remembered. Now, in a twisted experiment using the same DNA, a bigger, crazier, insane-er baby has been born called...HEPTADEMIC REDUX!

Hi all, welcome to the Heptademic Redux blog! Feel free to click on thingies to find out more about our show, the original production, our cast and crew, the Fringe Festival, and how to get tickets. And continue to keep checking the page as photos, interviews with the cast, character descriptions, and a whole lot of other fun stuff will be added to the page! Enjoy...and beware.
